QSM: Can you share a defining moment from your journey in the fashion industry that significantly shaped your career and passion for empowering women of all sizes?
Lorrine: During junior high school, I aspired to be part of the elite young girls' modeling troupe, despite being considered "too fat" by many. To my surprise, our coach for the tryouts was Mr. Brock, our school's 6'4, over 350 lbs, black male football coach, who also served as the head of security. Although I knew Mr. Brock well, having been in his security office for reasons I'm not so proud of, he became one of the few adults I trusted.
Mr. Brock could sense my lack of confidence during the tryouts and called me out. He made me wait until the end to try out and then walked me to the start of the runway. He told me to hold my head up, believe in myself, and not let the other kids intimidate me. I remember him saying, "Now walk, if you want this, you have to believe in yourself first." This was the moment that gave birth to the woman you see today.
After performing a few times, I became a regular feature in most of our school shows, serving as a role model for other girls. This fueled my passion for the fashion scene and encouraged me to seek out more opportunities in the world of fashion. I began to empower girls who looked like me, which was a bonus. I remember girls coming up to me and saying they were worried about joining in fear of what people would say, but now have the confidence to try. I knew then it started with me to be my sister's keeper, to support and encourage other women to believe in themselves no matter their outer appearance.
QSM: As the Director of "Ms. Full-Figured DMV," what values or messages do you prioritize in this role, and how have you empowered women through your leadership?
Lorrine: I strongly believe in the saying, “Lead by example”. When women joined the Ms. Full-Figured D.M.V. division, I made RESPECT our core value. I prohibited the use of curse words during our workshops by myself, the mentor, staffing, leadership members, and the delegates. Although it may sound simple, it was difficult for some. However, this helped them broaden their vocabulary, express themselves better, and ultimately strengthen their communication skills with one another. It was also important for us to carry ourselves with grace and poise, from the way we sit to the way we stand.
In addition to promoting body positivity, I prioritize providing opportunities for personal and professional growth for the women involved in our organization. Whether it's through leadership development workshops, networking events, or mentorship programs, I seek to empower women to embrace their full potential and pursue their goals with confidence.
Our MSFFDMV Sisterhood Creed sums up our values created by our inaugural Queen, ReLita Clarke, in 2019. She asked for one word from our 2017-2019 Queens, Ambassador, and myself to identify what the sisterhood means to each of us. After its creation, it was recited before every pageant preparation workshop. Insert from MSFFDMV Sisterhood Creed: “Our unique network of like-minded women is a dynamic experience that is centered around service, uplifting, encouragement, accountability, and loyalty. We support each other in unity, strength, and inspirational empowerment.”
Overall, my leadership at Ms. Full-Figured D.M.V. is guided by a commitment to celebrating diversity, promoting empowerment, and advocating for positive change in our communities.
QSM: Now, you recently made the decision to step down as the Director of "Ms. Full-Figured DMV." Can you share with us the factors that influenced this decision and how it aligns with your ongoing mission to empower women in the plus-size community?
Lorrine: This question here! After an immensely fulfilling seven years as the Director of Ms. Full-Figured D.M.V. pageant. I've decided it's time to embark on a new chapter of personal and professional growth. This decision is rooted in my unwavering commitment to influence and empower women, particularly within the plus-size community and beyond. By embracing change and seeking fresh avenues for impact, I am eager to explore opportunities that align with this mission. I'm deeply grateful for the experiences and relationships cultivated during my time as Director, and I look forward to continuing to make a meaningful difference in the lives of women through advocacy, mentorship, and innovative initiatives. As I transition, I remain dedicated to the ongoing success and empowerment of pageantry and the incredible women it serves.
However, I am still actively serving as Director until the end of the 2024 calendar year. I am excited about the path to the crowning of Ms. Full-Figured U.S.A. Nationals 2024. The 2023 MSFFDMV Queens Royal Court has begun their reign and is embarking on a journey of dedication, passion, and community service. While we prepare for Nationals, they are executing their individual platforms and collaborating to serve our communities.
I humbly request your support throughout their reign and look forward to the ongoing success of the Ms. Full-Figured D.M.V. division at the National level.
QSM: Talk to me more about The Lorrine Ross Experience LLC., and how does your production company contribute to promoting body positivity and inclusivity in pageantry?
Lorrine: The Lorrine Ross Experience LLC. is dedicated to revolutionizing the industry by promoting body positivity, inclusivity, and empowerment. Through our productions, advocacy efforts, and community engagement, we strive to create a more welcoming and accepting space where all women can shine.
Our mission: Creating more than just pageants; cultivating transformative journeys where self-empowerment takes center stage. LEARN.GROW.SERVE
In 2023 we added the Pink Purple Survivors Pageant to our line-up of pageant productions. It is a community-based pageant for women who have survived the unpredictable battles of breast cancer and or domestic violence.
The Pink Purple Survivors Pageant is a wonderful opportunity for women who have overcome or are currently on the journey of breast cancer and domestic violence survival to come together and celebrate their strength and resilience. By sharing personal stories and experiences, these survivors inspire and uplift one another.
I am advocating and excited for greater inclusivity and diversity in the pageant industry.
QSM: In your personal/professional life, you have managed to excel in a male-dominated industry as a Service Lane Manager at DARCARS Toyota. What strategies have you employed to navigate and succeed in this environment?
Lorrine: This has been a challenging experience since day one and it continues to be so. It is quite interesting when, commonly, a middle-aged male asks for a manager and then looks down on me when I approach them. They have already formed an opinion that I lack the necessary experience to assist them. However, I do my best and persist through it. Most of the time, they end up changing their minds and becoming one of my supporters.
Navigating and excelling in a male-dominated industry like automotive requires a combination of strategic approaches and personal qualities. I assert myself confidently in meetings, discussions, and decision-making processes, ensuring that my voice is heard and my ideas are valued. I focus on building strong relationships with colleagues, both male and female, across different departments and levels of the organization. Building a supportive network helps me navigate challenges and fosters collaboration and teamwork. As a leader, I lead by example and set high standards for performance and professionalism. I strive to inspire and motivate my team to achieve their goals and exceed expectations, regardless of gender.
QSM: Your advocacy for "Self-Love" has gained significant recognition. Can you tell us about the impact of this advocacy on your community and the individuals you've connected with along the way?
Lorrine: I LOVE LORRINE! Advocating for "Self-Love" has indeed been a journey of mine, and I'm grateful that many more are realizing the importance of it. This advocacy on my community, and the individuals and organizations, like EVERY Women of the MSFFDMV Sister Circle, the Ms. Full-Figured USA Brand, District of Curves Mickey Armstrong, ZaK and Aubrey of National Curves Day Inc., The Diva Movement Association, Netwerq Your Ass Off and QSM Tawana Blassingame, just to name a few, have created an environment of authenticity and support that is profound and heartening.
The advocacy for self-love has sparked important conversations about mental health, body positivity, and overall well-being. By promoting the importance of self-love, I've seen a positive shift in attitudes towards self-care and acceptance for others as well as myself. We are becoming more compassionate towards ourselves and others, recognizing that self-love is not selfish but essential for leading fulfilling lives.
QSM: What advice would you give to aspiring entrepreneurs, particularly women looking to establish themselves in competitive industries?
Lorrine: Entrepreneurship is a journey, and success rarely happens overnight. Stay patient, stay persistent, and keep striving towards your goals with passion and determination. You have the potential to make a significant impact and leave a lasting legacy in your chosen industry.
A quote that pushes me throughout my journey: “I am doing the best I can, with what I have and it’s enough!”
QSM: Family seems to be a cornerstone of your life. How do you balance your professional pursuits with your commitments to family, and what lessons have you learned from this balancing act?
Lorrine: I am incredibly thankful for my family God has blessed me with. My husband and children provide me with unwavering support and encouragement, allowing me to pursue my goals. They mean the world to me.
I work ten hours a day, five days a week, and spend my evenings working on my entrepreneurial tasks, while also making sure to spend quality time with my husband. Although I haven't achieved a perfect balance yet, I know that I am doing my best. For me, it's not about the amount of time spent with my family, but rather the quality of that time. When I'm with them, I am sure to enjoy my time and experiences, rather than just being physically present. Years of motherhood, marriage, and womanhood, as life has progressed, the most important lesson has been to openly communicate.
QSM: Looking ahead, what are your aspirations and goals for the future, both personally and professionally? How do you plan to continue making a difference in the lives of others through your work and advocacy?
Lorrine: My vision for the future is focused on my personal growth, advancing my career, and leaving a positive mark on the lives of others. Specifically, I aspire to engage in more speaking opportunities, cultivate platforms to empower youth, and bridge opportunities for women. With dedication, perseverance, and alignment with my community, I am happy for a brighter tomorrow.
QSM: What is your favorite quote?
Lorrine: “Be your own champion, you don't need confirmation from anyone to tell you, you are a WINNER!” -Lorrine Coleman-Ross
QSM: What is next for you?
Lorrine: With an open mind and a passion for making a positive impact, the future holds exciting possibilities. I'm looking forward to embracing new opportunities and continuing to grow, learn, and make a difference. I make the best of what is presented to me.
