Not My Eyes Showcase - 50 Years of Fighting Blindness
Who doesn’t appreciate a good show? More importantly, who doesn’t appreciate a good show with a cause? On April 9, 2022 the Not My Eyes Showcase gave us exactly what we came for and more. It was Elegant, Entertaining and Educational all at the same time. As a plus size fashion magazine, we have attended many fashion showcases, and this one was no different.
When Anna reached out and asked us for our support it was a no brainer, we were all in. We were more than happy to support a fashion event bringing awareness to blindness. The moment we walked in the door we were greeted by Anna and escorted to our seats. The ambiance of the venue was breathtaking. The blue and white décor was very well done, each table was a little different that the next, but it all came together in a well decked out room. What was the most impressive for me was that this team of visually disabled individuals understood the assignment and it showed.
The show opened with (blind) comedian Angel Bordo making us laugh (and he was really funny). The MC of the night (Carmen Hatchett) was fabulous. We played some great prized filled trivia games. I liked that the MC worked in some learning games designed to educate us on some of the different forms of eye diseases and how they could be prevented or treated to avoid blindness.
I learned that the DJ was also visually impaired. Which was a huge surprise to me because it was not apparent at all. I think a lot of the times when we think of people being blind, we imagine them with a seeing eye dog or a walking stick. But what we learned that night was that it is not always that obvious, especially since there are different levels of vision impairment and blindness. Which brings me to the models. While some had walking sticks and/or escorts, there were some that walked the runway without either. And they all walked the runway in their fab fashions and high heels effortlessly and with such confidence.
The designs shown were by Legendary LLC, THICKGIRLISFLY, Ashley Stewart, Kurvacious Boutique and Robert E. Knight. The fashion showcase was commentated by Tasha Monique Hill, who also did a phenomenal job keeping the crowd engaged.
The evening ended with some of the models being chosen by Tiff Scott, Executive Producer of Face of Kurvacious Model Competition, selecting some of the models to be a part of the competition this year (entry expenses paid for). And Jeannie Ferguson, Model and Runway Model Coach, gifting one of the models with a personal runway training class.
The message that evening was clear that evening, you are not defined by your disability. You can model, DJ, produce, do what you want just as well as the next person.
I can’t wait to see what these ladies bring next year. Job well done!
