THE RETURN OF DISTRICT OF CURVES
If you haven’t heard yet, let me share the good news with you. District of Curves is coming back and will be held on July 23, 2023. WHEW! Mark your calendars and don’t say no one told you!!! We could not be more excited about this.
District of Curves, Washington DC's premier plus size fashion event & community, produced by Mickey Armstrong made its debut in 2014 and ran strong (with sold out shows each year) until 2019. Many notable names have been known to come out in support of DOC. Plus Model Christina Mendez, THE Liris Crosse, Marie Denee of The Curvy Fashionista, Alexandra Boos, and Cassy Jones McBride of The International Fuller Woman Network, just to name a few. In addition to those who have supported the event in the past, some of our favorite brands have showcased on the runway. Brands such as Eloquii, Ashley Stewart, Fashion To Figure, TruDiva Designs, and Big & Tall brand The Winston Box.
The show was initially supposed to end in 2018 but came back for one more year when they partnered with The Fashion Centre At Pentagon City. That show highlighted all of the stores in the mall who catered to plus size fashions.
When we asked Mickey what led him to his decision to end DOC in 2019 he stated:
“I had personally become burned out. The show had grown to something that was much larger than what I had ever intended. The community loved it, and I loved helping the community and providing something like DOC. However, it was exhausting. I needed a break to determine in which direction I wanted to take the brand.”
If you are a producer, then you know how much time and energy is spent in production. So I felt every single last word of that response.
We asked Mickey what made him decide to make a comeback.
“In the years since our last show, the plus community and the world has changed a lot. DOC helped to pioneer the plus community in the Washington DC area. In many ways, COVID caused that growth to slow down tremendously. I want to see the community return to what it was Pre-Covid and continue to grow. DOC is the kind of show that facilitates that type of growth. Our show provides networking opportunities for people throughout the industry. It provides opportunities for models, designers, photographers, bloggers, stylists, MUAs, hair stylist, etc to connect with one another. The biggest reason for bringing it back now is I feel like it's the right time”.
